Presented by the Koorie Heritage Trust
Experience the oldest living culture in the world through Welcome Place @ Federation Square.
An important part of Aboriginal culture is the practice of welcoming
visitors to country by the traditional owners - Welcome Place continues this tradition.
Victoria is home to over 30 unique Aboriginal nations; each with its own culture, traditions and customs. Welcome Place provides a powerful, informative, fascinating insight into the rich diversity of Victorian Aboriginal culture.
Visitors will be able to sit and talk with local Indigenous elders and
cultural officers, while artists and performers will provide traditional
dancing, music and art and craft demonstrations each day.
Visitors can utilise touch screens to access information about the history
of Koorie people including the impact of government policies that saw the
removal of children from their parents with the Stolen Generations or what
life was like on six different missions throughout Victoria.
A fantastic artefact display will provide visitors with a look at tools and
weapons that Aboriginal people would have used many hundreds of years ago.
Films will run continuously at Welcome Place offering visitors further
insights into past and present Koorie culture.
Visitors wanting to explore significant sites and destinations of Aboriginal
Victoria further can pick up further information and maps at Welcome Place.
